On the mix buss, SSL's have a way of gluing the entire mix together if used well, while enhancing punch and presence. They're great for drums, guitars, and other mix elements that need definition in their attack phase.

Compared to some other analog compressors, they can really push a sound forward in a mix and make it punchier and in your face. While the plugin is called the glue, and it can really glue tracks together nicely, what SSL's really come to mind for, at least to me, is snap. So the real magic on an SSL is not the analog coloration, since it's relatively subtle (during the 80s when SSL's became popular, the common practice was to track through a Neve, and mix on an SSL, to get the Neve's vintage vibe on the tracks) - it's the very punchy and snappy master buss compressor. When SSL's came about they were adopted by studios and engineers mostly because they offered better per-channel controls and automation capabilities than the other consoles around at the time, not because of a particular sound. Compared to Neve, API, or tube consoles, they are very un-colored. As some have said, there is some analog saturation modeled here, but SSL consoles are actually known for their very open, clean, almost digital sound.
